Water of Leith: Colinton Dell
The wooded dells are part of a steep and open sided river valley of the Water of Leith. The juxtaposition of raised banks representing floodplains and hard rocky cliffs allow the river to meander gently towards the Forth. Its biodiversity status is due to a flourishing vegetation and abundant wildlife that call this site home. Long walks can be enjoyed along this whole section of the Water of Leith, taking you through Carboniferous sandstone and mudstone dating back 325 million years or so. These rocks were extensively quarried at Redhall, which supplied stone for St John’s Church at the West End, and at Hailes which was used over Edinburgh particularly in the building of New College, the Assembly Halls and Summerhall.
