Bishop Hill. Photo courtesy of Rosalind Garton
Bishop Hill owes its existence to the presence of a Permo-Carboniferous sill, which protects from erosion underlying sedimentary rocks of Devonian and Carboniferous age. We shall walk up the west side of the hill and see the well-exposed base of the sill and its underlying contact aureole, and old workings into the Charlestown Limestones.
