The main objects of the Group is the identification, designation and interpretation of sites as RIGS, Regionally Important Geological and Geomorphological Sites. The Group raises awareness of local RIGS and Earth heritage through publicity such as leaflets, booklets, posters, interpretation boards and the Internet, and by developing access and educational usage of sites and trails. Instead, efforts have been concentrated on interpretive publications. The Volunteer Group continued to involve a wider membership within the Edinburgh Geological Society in the many and varied aspects of the RIGS work. Nine informal evening meetings were held in Murchison House monthly during Winter 2000-2001. The meetings were mainly concerned with the Phase 1 Project. Copies of both leaflets have been distributed to Society members with the Billets, and also to all other 56 RIGS Groups. The Corstorphine Hill and Petershill leaflets were favourably reviewed in Down to Earth. The Corstorphine Hill leaflet was entered for The LASMO Geological Challenge Awards and received an honourable mention. The Corstorphine Hill leaflet has been produced in PDF form and put on the Edinburgh Geological Society web page. This file can be downloaded as a high-quality print. This form of publication could provide a model for the future. FINANCE: Grants obtained have been specifically for publication costs. The RIGS Group is, however, dependent on the EGS for running expenses. £300 was budgeted at the beginning of the session for secretarial, postal and material expenses, delegate expenses, etc. An additional £100 was needed to cover the cost of putting the PDF on the web.
