The Society recognises the following categories of membership:
Ordinary Fellowship election is by approval of Council, by written application supported either by recommendation by three Fellows or by written statement of the candidate's interests in geology. The current subscription rate is £20 per annum.
Family Fellowship available to an Ordinary Fellow and a member of his/her family residing at the same household. The current joint subscription is £30 per annum.
Senior Fellowship available to an Ordinary Fellow of one or more years membership who has attained the age of sixty. Senior Fellows do not receive the Scottish Journal of Geology. The current subscription rate is £10 per annum.
Life Fellowship available to Ordinary, Senior or Family Fellows by one single payment of a composition fee. This fee is fifty times the current ordinary subscription and allowance is made for previously paid annual subscriptions.
Associate Fellowship available to persons under 23 years of age at the beginning of the session of their admission or undertaking full-time education during the session of their admission (Junior Associates) or to ordinary members of the Glasgow Geological Society (Glasgow Associates). The current subscription rate for Junior Associate is £4 per annum, Glasgow Associate £10 per annum.
Honorary Fellowship conferred on an individual in recognition of merit or achievement in the science of geology, elected by a majority of votes at an ordinary meeting of the Society. The normal limit of Honorary Fellows of the Society is fifteen.
Corresponding Fellowship conferred on an individual of scientific merit or achievement outside the United Kingdom, elected by a majority of votes at an ordinary meeting of the Society. The normal limit of Correponding Fellows of the Society is twenty.
Distinguished Fellowship conferred on an individual in recognition of service to the Society, elected by a majority of votes at an ordinary meeting of the Society. The normal limit of Distinguished Fellows of the Society is ten.
