The Edinburgh Geologist
Issue no 37

Cover image for The Edinburgh Geologist issue 37

Editor: Alan Fyfe

Published October 2001

Cover illustration: the cover shows part of a drawing by John Clerk of Eldin made during an excavation of Frederick Street in 1786 or 1787. Of particular interest is the use of the 'brick' symbol for well-bedded competent strata with prominent joints perpendicular to the bedding. See article entitled 'Brick-a-brack' on page 28 of this issue.

This drawing is one of several belonging to Sir John Clerk of Penicuik and reproduced in facsimile in the folio entitled James Hutton's 'Theory of the Earth': the lost drawings by G Y Craig, D B McIntyre & C D Waterston, published in 1978 by Scottish Academic Press.
