Cover illustration: The Grizzly Bears - Readers may be interested to learn that Hercules was by no means the first bear to visit the Outer Hebrides*. The cover illustration is a cartoon of a Geologists' Annual Dinner circa 1880 taken from the Grizzly Bear Books which record in cartoon, verse and prose, the unofficial history of the Geological Survey in Scotland.

* refers to item of news in summer of 1980 where a bear escaped on the Island of Lewis while featuring in a television commercial. The bear, named Hercules, was recovered after being on the loose for some three weeks.
