Hercules was by no means the first bear to visit the Outer Hebrides*. The cover
illustration is a cartoon of a Geologists' Annual Dinner circa 1880 taken from
the Grizzly Bear Books which record in cartoon, verse and prose, the unofficial
history of the Geological Survey in Scotland. Reproduced

refers to item of news in summer of 1980 where a bear escaped on the Island of
Lewis while featuring in a television commercial. The bear, named Hercules, was
recovered after being on the loose for some three weeks.
