Cover illustration: this view of Suilven, one of the isolated west Sutherland peaks of Torridonian Sandstone resting on a pavement of Lewisian Gneiss, was drawn in 1888 on the back of a Geological Survey field map by Dr B N Peach. Many of Peach's field maps are embellished with similar drawings of landscapes, geological sections, animals or rustic scenes.
